Chromeo is an electro-funk band from Montreal, Canada, consisting of the two musicians David Macklovitch and Patrik Gemayel. Their style of music is heavily influenced by 1980s funk and synth-pop with dance and electro elements, commonly referred to as nu-disco in the music press. The band members met at the Collège Stanislas in the 1990s and wryly describe themselves as a "successful Arab/Jewish partnership". Soaking up vinyl records from the 1980s with more contemporary hip-hop, the two have been performing together since the age of 15, cleverly synthesising their influences with irony and humour. Their first album, She's in Control, was released in 2004 to critical apprasial. Their synthesis of 1980s R&B with a modern electro style proved famous with clubs, as their single Needy Girl became a worldwide hit. Although the album was not a huge commercial success, it did much to set the band on their path. Truer global success came with their second album, Fancy Footwork, which became a sensation as the band was successfully received at summer festivals in North America and Europe. The new album offered a cleaner and more cohesive style, with singles Tenderoni and Bonafied Lovin' becoming dance hits. Chromeo's third album followed in 2010, further expanding their sound and reaching number 4 on the US dance charts. With four singles and a full summer tour booking, Chromeo continued to receive rave critical reviews. Their fourth album, White Women (2014), continued their tried and tested musical trajectory, featuring contributions from Indie music stars like Ezra Koenig, Toro y Moi and Pat Mahoney. Now at number 1 in the US dance charts, Chromeo's sound became further polished with impressive string arrangements. Chromeo released their most recent album, Head Over Heels (2018), to continued appraisal. Although some critics had expressed some electro-funk fatigue in their more polished sound, their singles — Juice and Bedroom Calling — have received significant internet attention and praise.
